Project Overview

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s largest city, has been suffering from air pollution and traffic congestion caused by motorcycles and motor vehicles, which are the main means of transportation for its citizens as it experiences rapid population growth and economic development. Under such circumstances, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Line 1, being constructed through assistance of a Japanese yen loan, is expected to be the first urban rail project in the city, and to lead the way in helping resolve various urban issues. With a total length of 19.7 km, the line will connect Ben Thanh Station, located in the center of the city, to Suoi Tien Terminal Station, located in the northeast of the city, via a 2.5 km underground section and a 17.2 km elevated section.

As a member of a joint venture (Nippon Koei Co., Ltd., the managing company) to supervise the construction, our involvement is with work related to operation and maintenance (mainly training of operation staff and preparation of manuals). From July 2020, the Vietnam Railway College, which has been commissioned by the joint venture, started training drivers and preparations for the inauguration of operations.
